Matthew 5:14-16 “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.
One of the first songs I remember learning as a small child was, ‘This little light of mine. I’m gonna let it shine.’ The song itself is wrapped around the verse Matthew 5:16. According to Jesus, we (His disciples), are the light of the world. We must not hide that light but instead let it shine through each day.
“As we let our own light shine we unconciously give other people the permission to do the same.” ~Marianne Williamson
When we experience bouts of darkness in our homes from an electrical outage we never seem to hestitate to find a way to provide the necessary light. In fact, we are bold in our efforts to locate the matches, candles, and lanterns to move us out of darkness and into light.
Our lives are no different. When we light the way, others see us in action. They can see hope, faith, strength, courage, confidence and conviction carried out right before their eyes because of our love, our commitment, and our heart for God.
We don’t have the perfect life (not yet anyway), but through real-life living we can be an example to others as we walk through both good times and bad.
“Nothing can dim the light that shines from within.” ~ Maya Angelou
