Choose a Joy-filled Life
Today marks the third Sunday of Advent and we are celebrating the gift of joy. As we light the third candle (rose or pink) let’s think about choosing to live a joy-filled life. God’s Word commands us to ‘Rejoice in the Lord.’ We are to be joyful always and realize that our joy is for His glory.
As I read Luke 2:1-20, I am reminded of Jesus’ birth and the following description in verses 9-11: “An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is the Messiah, the Lord.”
What Brings You Joy?
Do you know what brings you joy? Making a list might prove helpful. It would certainly bring perspective and help you understand that with Jesus you have much to be joyful about. You see, no matter what our circumstances are, He is going to take care of us, love us and protect us. Jesus is always present–in worry or doubt, in victory or defeat, and during the difficulties, struggles and tragedies. Lean on Christ and trust Him. It is through this sweet relationship with Jesus that our faith grows, deepens and strengthens. It is through these times that we experience joy at its very best–the deep abiding kind that is long-lasting.
Joy Comes in the Morning
“But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them sing joyful praises forever. Spread your protection over them, that all who love your name may be filled with joy.” Psalm 5:11 NLT
Joy to the World
In Matthew 2, God’s Word describes the wise men following the star, asking ‘Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?’ They continued their journey so they could worship him. As they followed the star, it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. And they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshipped him. Joy to the World, the Lord has come. Let earth, receive her King.
Follow God’s Purpose
Just like the wise men, we must turn our attention to the signs God provides and focus on the Holy One. We must follow His direction and plan for our lives if we’re to get where we’re going. Let’s be thoughtful about what we want and what God wants. Be prayerful and ask Him for guidance, protection and provision. Living a joy-filled life is a choice. If we seek Him every step of the way then we will experience great joy.
“The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.” Psalm 126:3 NIV
The Season of Joy
As we look to the week ahead, let’s not get so wrapped up in the busyness of our lives that we forget to share in the experiences of celebrating Christmas. Take every opportunity to soak up the joy in the season. Spread light to those around you. Thank God for the gift of His Son. “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.” Isaiah 7:14

Let Us Pray
Dear Lord, I want to rejoice in You always. Help me to be a light for others in the dark world. Help me to be a light as my cup overflows with Your abundance and good news. I pray You will give me the courage and confidence to share Your gift of joy with others. Let me find unending joy as I spend time in Your Word and draw closer to You. Amen.
